Kroger Houston Invests $225 Million for Affordable, High-Quality Health Care for Nearly 8,000 Eligible Associates

While UFCW Local 455 Threatens to Strike to Protect Union-Preferred Health Care Plan

Kroger Houston Division lauds the news that nearly 8,000 eligible Houston associates joined the company-administered health care plan since going into effect in January 2021.

“Kroger associates – many of them Local 455 members – are now counting on more reliable, more affordable, and more transparent health care coverage in the company plan than the union-preferred plan,” said Laura Gump, president of Kroger’s Houston Division.

The Facts on Kroger’s Company-Administered Health Care Plan:

  • In 2022, eligible Kroger Houston associates will pay just $36 for individual coverage or $184 for family coverage each month in a company-administered plan. By comparison, the Texas average per month for individual coverage is $124 and $579 for family coverage according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

“Striking over who administers the health care benefits for our associates defies common sense. This is putting politics over the lives and well-being of over 17,000 Kroger Houston associates and their families,” Gump continued.

 Kroger will continue to be transparent throughout the negotiation process with our associates and with the public. We will continue to do what’s right for our associates. Our focus remains on our associates and getting an agreement at the bargaining table.
